Transferable skills

I feel with the current situation, now is a good time to go into transferable skills. Things have changed drastically for pretty much everyone in the last few weeks. We have all had to adapt and change just to get by. Our day to day life has been turned upside down. It is amazing how we have all ‘settled’ into this new way of life so quickly. We have taken skills from our previous life/jobs and are now using them in completely new ways. It is incredible how adaptable we are.

The past few weeks I have been reflecting on skills that people gain and how we are constantly learning. We don’t give ourselves enough credit for the amount of information we take on everyday and how we process it. Some information may come and go and we never need it again. Other information comes and we need it for a prolonged period of time. But certain information comes and at the time it doesn’t seem relevant so our brains discard it, but months/years/decades later that information becomes useful. Somehow, we manage to scrap what we remember of it together, until we have it all. Our brains do this every day.

As performers, we are constantly given new information, corrections, trends, changes in choreography/direction etc… This makes us very adaptable which is an amazing skill to have in many jobs outside of performing. A skill we have learnt from one profession can be taken into another.

At the moment I am teaching some weeks in school and some weeks online. In a school environment I am comfortable as it is what I am used to. Teaching online is another ball game! However, I can’t show my worries or frustrations at technology when I am teaching the children because my feelings will rub off on them. It is already a weird and stressful enough time for them, I don’t want to make it worse. I am there to support them. So, I use my many years performing experience, and put on the ‘happy, calm, fun, everything is fine teacher show’ for them and get on with the class. This is another way of transferring my skills between jobs.

These are just a few of the many transferable skills we gain as performers. There are so many more, like, confidence, being good team leaders, being well presented, speaking clearly, being able to express ourselves....the list goes on. Also, although some of the skills can apply to many performers, there will be other skills that are more specialised to you. Remember what makes you special.

Stay safe, and take a moment to realise how wonderful we all are.
