Reflection

This is the last weekend before our assignments are due in. I have been going through my work, editing, checking and reflecting on everything that has happened this past year. When I started this course in January, I had no idea how it was going to be, let alone everything else 2020 has had to offer! There have been good bits, bad bits and the usual life ‘in-between’ bits.

Something I have learnt from this course is the art of reflection. It isn’t about living in the past, but about embracing your past to enhance your future. Especially when times are tough, take a look back and see how far you’ve come. See everything you have learnt, the things that have changed. But don’t dwell in past errors and mistakes- no one is perfect. Instead of criticising ourselves for our mistakes, why don’t we celebrate the learning that has come from them?

I have been looking back at how I felt at this time in module 1- the last week before everything is due in. I am having similar feelings now, as I did then. The worries of ‘will my work will be good enough?’ and ‘have I don’t it correctly?’ but also a sense of pride that I have got this far. I think it is natural for most students to feel this way about their work, especially when you spend so much time on it and really care about it. These feelings reminded me of a skype at the beginning of module 1, where we were explained that part of this course is having faith in your own ability. This can be a challenge for many people, including myself. Naturally as humans, we want reassurance and support in numbers- but having that confidence in yourself gives you a different kind of freedom and gives you the opportunity to look at things you may have otherwise missed because you’re so focused on what others think.

Reflection is an amazing tool to have and to use well. To anyone starting this course, I would really recommend keeping a reflective journal. Even if you don’t think something is relevant or important, still write it down, because you will be amazed at what pops up again in later modules. Everything is connected in some way.

  1. Great post alys! Isn't it crazy to think back to when we started in January and what a whirlwind year it has turned out to be! This is a good stance to have on reflection and something that i think will come in use as we begin module 3! xx
