Reflection from Module 1 and 2

It was lovely getting to see everyone on the group meeting, people who are new and people who are returning, like me. Can’t believe I am at the start of module 3- where has the time gone! It was great to refresh myself with some of the key points for this course. For those of you starting module 1 and 2 these points below really helped me through the modules.

Handbooks- re-read these as many times as you need and mark certain pages that have important information on, so you can find them easily. Highlight and make notes on them as you need. You can also use the bibliography on the back to help guide you to more literature to read. Google Scholar is an amazing place to find literature- there is a link on the Unihub page to it.

Blogs- use these in a way that is useful to you personally. Write about what resonates with you from the course. For instance, you could write about things you have found, or things that you have questions about. Also, go and check other people blogs who have already completed the module you are on, as the chances are, they may have written about something you are looking into, and so it could give you a fresh take or some different ideas. It’s helpful to comment on other people’s blogs because then you can have discussions and it opens our minds to different perspectives.

Facebook group- feel free to post blogs and any questions here. It’s a great space to share and see what others are doing and it’s a place we can all support each other, whatever module we are on.

Skypes- The skypes are really useful as you get a chance to talk about what you have found and where you are with your studies. It is also a chance to hear about what others are doing and so can help open each of our minds to things we may not have previously considered. As well as the skypes arranged by the supervisors, we also had a Sunday skype where just students attend. There is no pressure to attend these skypes, they are very casual and you can turn up as you need. If you have any particular questions, they are a good space to chat with people from other modules as well as your own. Sometimes it is just nice to be able to verbalise your ideas.

Mindset- This course isn’t about getting answers, but rather a deeper understanding of yourself and your practice. This can be challenging to get accustomed to, as it’s a different way of thinking. Something that I have found really important and helpful, is to have faith in yourself and your own abilities. No one else is you, and so they will not have the exact same experiences and knowledge as you. Your experiences are personal to you and that is what makes you, and your practice unique.

Notes- As well as the handbooks, I have a separate notebook that I take notes in from books I’ve read, things I’ve watched and skypes I’ve attended, just to name a few. I find it helpful to have a specific university notebook, so I know everything is in one place. It is also helpful to draw diagrams and mind map. Sometimes that can help create clarity rather than just words.

Reflection- reflecting is a really important part of learning on this course. It is through our experiences that we learn, and so by reflecting on those experiences we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our knowledge. Keep on questioning, don’t just accept things.

These are a few main points that have helped me through module 1 and 2. If anyone thinks of anything else please comment below!

  2. Hi Alys, thank you for sharing all your little tips. I especially liked how you have touched on having a positive mindset. This is something I often struggled with in Module One, but you are completely right, it's so important to have faith in our own practice, ideas and knowing that we have the ability to overcome anything. x
