Group Skype 2

On Wednesday 1st April we had our second skype for all modules. We covered a range of topics in the meeting, including- finding your own voice, interviewing and integration. Below I have bullet pointed some of the main points we covered in each topic.

Finding our own voice

  • How can we write in a way that isn’t too casual but without losing yourself?
  • How writing on social media is different to writing an essay- How do we write blogs in comparison to essays?
  • Keeping core intensions clear
  • Having different documents open to write down different ideas. Write all your ideas down and then go about moving it around and breaking bits up.
  • The process is messy; things don’t always go in a straight line.

Interviewing

  • Why do we interview?
  • What is the point?
  • What are we trying to achieve/gain?
  • How interviewing in person is different from over the phone/ skype
  • Silences are ok- what do the silences tell you
  • Its not all about what people say, how do they say it, what don’t they say?
  • Don’t be scared to change the questions you prepared or change the structure you had been following
  • Take notes from what they say and then create further questions from information they have given
  • Remember people answers will vary depending on each day and the current situation they are in

Integration

  • How does everything link- networks to ethics to Web 2.0…
  • Don’t make assumptions- keep asking why
  • Be open to information and think about how you handle it, what you do with it- don’t just receive it
  • It's ok not to have a solid structure, everything interlinks and flows.
  • We are all unique and so how things link for us is personal
  • Structure can restrict us as artists
  • It’s good when things aren’t familiar, we are learning and pushing ourselves

I'm going to end with something Helen spoke about. When we choreograph, very rarely does it just come to us and we keep it exactly the way we first thought. It’s a process and it constantly changes. We move bits around and scrap bits completely and then add new things. It then changes even further when we give it to the students to learn as they will interpret and dance it in different ways. The dance is in a constant state of change. It can help to view our assignments like this. Nothing is ever ‘set’. We are constantly learning and changing and it’s good to view our work in this way. Use the skills we have gained from dance and choreography to help our work here. I found some comfort in this idea.

  1. Hello Alys,
After reading your blog about your 9pm skype it got me thinking of my practise, as the way we choreograph and the point that was made about it always changing, is very true. Its relaxed me in a way for what is yet come. Both in my practise and life.

Also the section about finding your own voice. I find it takes practise to be able to write an essay correctly, so that it's not too informal, but that all links back to thinking in a way of choreographing. It will forever be changing as we learn. Thankyou for your blog was very interesting to get me to think like this.

    1. Hi Hannah,
Thank you for reading, I'm glad it helped! I'm definitely forever finding out and learning new things from this course and I'm realising that things always changing is ok!
      Thank you

  2. Hey Alys, this is a very interesting post. I loved the analogy Helen gave about choreography and how it is 'fluid' and ever changing. I also agree with what was being said about how things don't go in a straight line. I think if I have taken anything away from this course it's that point! This whole process for me has been 'crisscrossed' and 'loopy', but has still somehow managed to come together at the end. I think I've learned that it's okay that things don't run in a straight line. Good luck! xx

    1. Hi Cath,
Thank you, its really helpful to have your insights. I've realised so far how much things change and for me I am learning to be ok with the fluidity of things and the 'loopy' side of it, as you said! Its taking time but I'm getting there.
      Thank you!
      Aly xx
